firework-comic:

This is a cut from my favorite episode of Tiny Toon Adventures. It describes the animation process. Please reblog, put it on youtube, etc. because some grown adults on this planet still believe animation is easy.

Yes we now do all this completely digitally. Without getting up from our computer workstations. But if the medium has changed, the method hasn’t.

Little tricks like bone support and auto-lip synching make it easier to edit and in some cases create animation on computers. Flash, Anime Studio, what have you, can be used to create professional-quality animation without the need for a WB-sized studio.

But backgrounds are not auto-generated.

Character design, storyboards, layouts, musical scores, and writing are not made by a quick little program on a computer, buzzing away. They’re made by artists and writers working their ass off and not giving up until they have a polished work.

Anyone who tries to make even a simple animation at all in their life will realize how painstaking the process still is.

Animation is art, just harder.

An alternate version of the “Play Nice” scene from Toy Story.

Every version of this scene is problematic. Sid poses a significant threat, but Woody defeats him with neither wit nor repercussions. To paraphrase Who Framed Roger Rabbit:

BUZZ
You mean you could’ve broken “the toy rule” at any time?

WOODY
No, not at any time! Only when the script writes itself into a corner. Wokka wokka!

But this version of the scene illustrates an important guideline: less is more.

Sometimes it’s helpful to point out your plot holes with a joke. We forgive it, because at least the story’s thinking as much as we are. But if it’s an important plot hole, joking about it feels like you’ve put your effort into making fun of the problem, rather than fixing it. It’s condescending.

You’re better off sweeping it under the rug, and praying that some jerk with a Tumblr doesn’t think about it for more than two seconds.
